Manonmaniam Sundaranar University

Manonmaniam Sundaranar University (MSU), named after the famous Tamil Scholar Professor P. Sundaram Pillai, was established on 7 September, 1990 to cater to the long felt needs of the people of the three southern most districts of Tamil Nadu namely Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Kanyakumari. The University has under its jurisdiction 61 affiliated colleges, 5 Mano Colleges and 1 Constituent College, with 65,000 students on rolls. These colleges, amongst which three are over 100 years old (St. John’s College, M.D.T. Hindu College, Sarah Tucker College, the oldest women’s college in the state), have contributed decisively to the cause of higher education of this region.

There are 24 academic departments in the University. Sri Paramakalyani Centre for Environmental Sciences functioning at Alwarkurichi is an illustrious example of University-Industry collaboration while the Centre for Marine Science and Technology at Rajakkamangalam is breaking new ground in Coastal Area Studies. All the University departments are receiving research projects from several funding agencies in India, Europe, USA, Japan and UNO. The University Library has rich collection of books and journals on a wide range of subjects. The University Act authorizes the functioning of Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education outside the university jurisdiction and the courses offered through this mode are recognized by the Distance Education Council of India.

Karnataka State Open University

Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) was established on 1st June 1996 with the assent of H.E. Governor of Karnataka as a full fledged University in the academic year 1996 vide Government notification no ED 1 UOV 95 dated 12th February 1996 (KSOU Act – 1992). Kakatiya University

Kakatiya University was established on 19th August, 1976 to fulfil the aspirations of the Telangana people for higher education. The founding of the University was in fact a historic event in the sense that heralded a new era in the realms of higher education of this region. The erstwhile Post-Graduate Centre of Osmania University was upgraded and named Kakatiya University. The development of the University over the years has been gradual but impressive. The University was initially accredited with B+ grade by the NAAC in 2002 and reaccredited with A grade in 2008. The University situated in a sprawling area of about 650 acres, has now 24 departments in four colleges on the campus with a network of eleven constituent colleges and 471 affiliated colleges. Periyar University

The Government of Tamil Nadu established the Periyar University at Salem on 17th September 1997 as per the provisions of the Periyar University Act, 1997. The University covers the area comprising the districts of Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri. The University got the 12(B) and 2f status from the University Grants Commission and has been accredited by NAAC with B+ grade in 2007.

The University is named after the Great Social Reformer E.V.Ramasamy affectionally called “Thanthai Periyar”. The University aims at developing knowledge in various fields to realize the maxim inscribed in the logo “Arival Vilayum Ulagu” (Wisdom Maketh World).
“Holistic development of the students” is the primary objective of the esteemed Periyar University.

Periyar Institute of Administrative Studies (PERIAS) started functioning from March 2009. Muthamizharingnar Tamizhavel Kalaingar M. Karunanidhi Research Centre was established in order to widen the horizen of knowledge of Tamil students by doing research in the Eyal, Esai, Nadagam contributed by the Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Dr.M.Karunanidhi.
Centre for Nano Science and Technology has been established recently in the Department of Physics. The Government of Tamil Nadu has generously sanctioned Rs. 1 Crore for the academic and research activities of the Centre. Department of Geology proposes to establish a Centre for Geoinformatics and Planetary Studies in the current academic year.

Periyar Institute of Distance Education (PRIDE) is imbibing knowledge into the veins of the students who could not take up the regular academic studies in affiliated colleges due to their economic condition. PRIDE has five hundred and twenty five study centres throughout India and seven abroad.

Uttarakhand Open University

Karnataka State Women University

Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha was established in the year 1918 by our beloved father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi with the sole aim of propagating Hindi in southern states. The first Pracharak was none other than Devadoss Gandhi son of Mahatma Gandhi.

‘Hindi Prachar’ was a movement that emerged as part of Freedom Movement and the leaders who led the nation to ‘FREE INDIA’ felt the necessity of making a single Indian Language the National Language, and through that language unify the people and thereby intensify National Integration.

1927 saw the emergence of Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha as an independent organisation and Mahatma Gandhi was its President till he breathed his last.

Gandhiji desired that the ‘Hindi Prachar’ in the south should be carried on by involving the local people of the respective area. Till 1920, this Sabha had its office at George Town in Madras and after some years shifted to Mylapore and from thereafter to Triplicane where it functioned till 1936.

Provincial Branches were established in 1936 to intensify the movement and the same year saw the Sabha moving into the then new town, Thyagaraya Nagar, in Madras on a sprawling 7-acre land. The foundation for the building was laid by Janab Abdul Hameed Khan and the building was declared open on 7th October, 1936 by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru who was then the President of the Indian National Congress.

Preliminary Examinations were being held regularly from 1922. The first degree level examination ‘Rashtrabasha Visharad’ was conducted and Convocation held which was addressed by Kaka Kalelkar in 1931.

The Sabha celebrated its Silver Jubilee in the year 1946 after the Second World War and Gandhiji presided over the celebrations.

To commemorate his presence during the Silver Jubilee celebrations in the Sabha and mark that historic occasion it was decided to build a Gandhi Mantap at the spot where Mahatmaji made his presence felt. Accordingly, a Mantap was built and it was inaugurated on 9th June 1963 by Sri Morarji Desaiji.

Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha which is marching ahead towards its centenary year is conducting various Examinations in Hindi which are detailed below under the head ‘Examination Department’.

An important landmark is the building of ‘Mahatma Gandhi Convocation Hall’ (Mahatma Gandhi Padavidan Mantap) exclusively for the use of holding the annual convocation and other functions of the Sabha.

In 1993 the President of the Sabha and the then Prime Minister of India Hon. Sri P.V. Narasimha Rao inaugurated the Amritotsav “Platinum Jubilee” celebrations at his residence on March 1993 at New Delhi.

The excellent technical libraries include facility of Videocassettes, E-mail, Internet, CD-ROM, and practical. In addition to above, face-to-face (F2F) and telephone counselling is provided to distance learners by in-house faculty of DDE at the headquarter and by the resource persons at respective study centers.

In order to promote effective academic and administrative support to the distance learners, DDE has a network of study centers, which makes teaching-learning process easier and more interesting for them in a congenial atmosphere. Expert teams make frequent visit to the study centers to get first hand information and this feedback helps the directorate to make further improvement in its programmes.

DDE is housed in a spacious building, which is properly ventilated and easily approachable. Enquiry cell and Computer lab are manned by experienced staff. The credit for the present status of the directorate goes to the invaluable participation and co-operation of the University Authority, IGNOU, DEC, NCTE & Statutory Bodies associated with Distance Education Systems.
